"Forward"

The College motto is an abbreviation of "Come, then, let us go forward together", which is the final phrase of Sir Winston Churchill's "Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat" speech to the House of Commons on 13th May 1940, his first speech as Prime Minister.

About Churchill College

One of the 31 Colleges that comprise the University of Cambridge, Churchill College is also the National Memorial to Sir Winston Churchill.

Founded in 1958, Churchill College was the first of the 'modern era' of Cambridge Colleges. It is also the only Cambridge College specifically established to pursue excellence in the teaching and research of science, engineering and technology. Nobel Prize winners Francis Crick, discoverer of DNA, and Anthony Hewish, the discoverer of the pulsar, were amongst its founding Fellows.

Set in 42 acres of open parkland in the north west corner of the city, it's location is particularly convenient for the University's new West Cambridge site - home to many of the University's scientific departments including the Institute of Astronomy, the School of Veterinary Medicine, the Cavendish and Microsoft Laboratories.

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, the distinguished architectural historian, described the buildings of Churchill College as an 'outstanding conception' and the 'best of the new'. The buildings were designed by the architect Richard Sheppard, and were some of the first of the 1960's modernist tradition to be listed. The architecture pays reference to the traditional vernacular of inter-linked courtyards, but the style is decidedly contemporary.

The Churchill Archive Centre, designed as the formal repository for Sir Winston Churchill's papers, has a world wide reputation as a leading archive of 20th century political history. The initial collection has grown to include 570 collections of private papers including Baroness Thatcher, Rt Hon Ernest Bevin and Sir John Nott.

Also located on the site is the Møller Centre. This award winning management training & conference venue was founded following a donation to Churchill College by the AP Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation. The donation was made in recognition of the support that Sir Winston Churchill gave to Denmark during the Second World War.

All the facilities of the Centre are available for hire throughout the year, providing 23 spacious training rooms, 71 en-suite bedrooms along with a stylish restaurant and Tower Lounge Bar. This is all supported by a dedicated team of professional, customer focused staff.
